CATALYST Team Member Honored Terrill Orton was recently awarded the Love Community Service Award by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. She was selected from a group of nominees across the state to receive the award for outstanding community service work. Her caring attitude and actions were exemplified while on a trip to Nicaragua in January 2008 with Catalyst. There she was part of a team that shared Bible lessons memory verses and played with hundreds of children in various villages.

Terrill and the rest of the team were involved with preparation several months before the trip. There were meetings to equip the team for the things they would inevitably encounter in Nicaragua; extreme poverty, beggars, and needy hungry children just to name a few. The team also prepared Bible lessons, activities, skits and memory verses to teach the children. terrill orton peeling orange

Just outside the airport in Managua the team encountered the needy children. Kids were trying to sell gum, candy and various other things just for a bit of money. It was great to see how the team members responded kindly to these needy children. This kind, caring and generous attitude continued through the course of the trip.

God’s love was shown to the children in numerous ways. Daniel Burke and Lucas Wilmore had an exciting adventure on their hands as they taught all the Nicaraguan boys how to kick a football. Hannah terrill orton handing out breadRegan and Ashley Myatt were University of Tennessee Martin nursing students. They were able to aid in several situations where their knowledge played a critical part in sharing love with needy people. Jana Ogg and Kelsey Sigman were always in the middle of a pile of kids. Seeing them play Red Rover with 50 kids in the middle of a dirt field is a memory that none of us will soon forget. Margaret Brown was the teams adopted mom and spent time with the smaller children that were too young to play in the field. They were fascinated with the crayons and coloring sheets that she brought for them. Rebecca McClure was always there holding a child’s hand; and we’ll always remember Sandy Mehlhorn repeatedly blowing up the huge beach ball to share with the kids. Andrew Brown was the team leader and organizer. He is the Executive Director of Catalyst Mission and his previous experience leading teams to Nicaragua were an asset to our team. Renee Richer and Kris Rickert were along to document the team with stills and video, but they too were involved with the children. Finally, Terrill Orton was always there when there was an opportunity to give away food to the needy children.

This is exactly the purpose of Catalyst. Terrill summed it up when she said, “There is no greater feeling than to see someone, especially a child, smile because they just realized that someone cares.”
